Cambodia Development Resource Institute (CDRI), Cambodia's leading independent development policy research institute, in partnership with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), invites applications from young and professional researchers in ASEAN for its Visiting Scholar Programme. Up to four scholars who have a strong passion for research and a reputation in their field will be awarded. The programme aims to:
- Promote policy-relevant research that meets the highest academic standards;
- Provide prominent scholars with insight into the policy research environment at CDRI; and
- Foster individual and organisational collaboration between researchers and regional research institutions.
Under the Visiting Scholar Programme, the Visiting Scholar will spend four weeks at CDRI’s Centre for Development Economics and Trade (CDET) between September and November 2024, and engage with CDRI for six months during the publication process.
During their time at CDRI, the Visiting Scholars will:
- Complete a policy research paper presenting key evidence from their past work and clear policy recommendations, and process it for publication at CDRI. This past research or analysis should address policy-related issues in the ASEAN context.
- Complete a policy brief, co-authored with a researcher of CDRI, synthesising the findings and recommendations of the policy research paper.
- Present the research paper at CDRI research seminars.
In considering applications, CDRI will pay particular regard to the relevance of the research to current and future problems in economics, such as:
- Macroeconomic policy
- Industrial policy
- Foreign direct investment
- Global Value Chains (GVCs)
- Green finance
- Digital economy
- Labour market transition
- Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs)
- Income distribution and inequality
- Social protection
CDRI will select the Visiting Scholars who are passionate about policy research, publication, and knowledge sharing and hold a Master's or PhD in the social sciences.
Programme Assistance
CDRI will offer financial support for accommodation, a round-trip economy-class air ticket, and a daily allowance for living expenses for the designated period of stay in Phnom Penh.
Location and Facilities
The Visiting Scholar will be based at the CDRI Office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. They will have access to the CDRI office space, library and data archives, as well as to computing and statistical facilities needed for their research.
Applications should be submitted in English and must include:
- A two-page summary of the past research work that the candidate proposes to develop into a policy research paper at CDRI, specifying the objectives of the work, the methodological, statistical and computing requirements involved, and proposed policy recommendations;
- A letter of motivation, current curriculum vitae, including details of the candidate's publication record; and
- A letter of recommendation from the current supervisor or director.
