The Khmer Language and Culture Program (KLCP) provides an opportunity for US and non-US faculty, post-graduate researchers, and upper level undergraduates to participate in an intensive eight-week study abroad program, from June 10 to August 2, 2024, in Phnom Penh with field trips to Siem Reap, Cambodia. This ongoing program is administered in collaboration with the University of Hawai’i, Mānoa’s (UHM) Khmer Language Program. This CKS program is designed for those who wish to develop their Khmer language skills and gain a better understanding of contemporary Cambodian society for academic and professional purposes, but who have not completed two years of formal Khmer language training. Field Coordinator: One position is open to work with the Khmer Language and Culture Program (KLCP) of the Center for Khmer Studies in Cambodia. The Field Coordinator will work closely with the program participants and instructor with the supervision from  the CKS team. The eight-week program will include one week of field trips in Siem Reap. 

WORKING PERIOD 

  • Pre-program: The Field Coordinator will work about 5-10 hours with the Program Manager on coordinating the logistical needs for students during the program. This includes finalizing and confirming all appointments with people and places by May 31, 2024. The Field Coordinator will also organize a pre-departure orientation meeting (virtual) with participating students. 
  • During the program: The Field Coordinator will work full-time from June 10 to August 2, 2024.  

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate the daily operation of the program. 
  • Organize the afternoon hands-on activities and work with the Khmer language instructor to refine the curriculum of the program. 
  • Work with the Khmer language instructor, students, administrators and Program Manager, NGOs and local communities in Cambodia. 
  • Provide logistical services ,including airport pickup and drop off and assisting in finding housing for participants. 
  • Work closely with the students and instructor on a day-to-day basis and support them as needed. 
  • Monitor the program operations and keep the Program Manager and CKS team posted on the progress or issues and address them with consultation with relevant personnel.
  • Other related activities, including the writing of an internal evaluation report of the language instructor, the participants, and the program and submitting it to the Program Manager. 
  • Each day, the Field Coordinator will work at least 4 hours during the afternoon program. Monday and Thursday: work with NGOs or guest speakers. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: work with students on their individual projects. 

 REQUIREMENTS 

  • Minimum qualifications: BA degree or higher in second language acquisition, linguistics, literature, or related South-East Asia fields. 
  • International teaching experience
  • Administrative skills. 
  • Experience  coordinating programs or activities. 
  • Experience working with foreign students or foreigners. 
  • A good knowledge of Cambodian culture, history, and current issues is a plus. 
  • Being fully available during the program’s operation.
  • Very good spoken and written English skills. 
  • Energetic, friendly, and innovative.
