WUSC is a network of individuals and postsecondary institutions who believe that all peoples are entitled to the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to a more equitable world. Our mission is to foster human development and global understanding through education and training.
For us, education is the one universal path leading to a better and more equitable world, the path that both reveals our responsibility to contribute to the common good and makes it possible for us to do so. Our award-winning projects are developed to address local needs and reduce poverty, and are delivered with local partners to ensure sustainability. We also support development education activities and international programs at Canadian colleges and universities. Overseas volunteers are key to the work WUSC does through its Uniterra program (run jointly with CECI). Return volunteer Jennifer King, who spent 14 months in Sri Lanka working as a business advisor on a local rural development and agriculture project, remains highly committed and involved in development. She recently accompanied South-North volunteers Mr. Nilantha Athapattu, Manager of the Rural Enterprise Network – her colleague in Sri Lanka – and Mr. Sunil Liyanage. They visited Canadian partner organizations such as the Guelph Food Technology Centre, the Ontario Natural Food Co-op, Transfair Canada and Ten Thousand Villages for training and enhancing their positioning on North American market trends and opportunities. “ I’ve been maintaining some volunteer capacity with my Sri Lankan organization since I left,” says Jennifer. “This visit is a great way for me to keep working with them and continue to build the capacity of my counterpart in Sri Lanka.” more
