The Weatherhead Initiative on Global History (WIGH)/Weatherhead Research Cluster on Global Transformations promotes global history as a critical humanistic enterprise in today’s world of coexisting and contending cultures through research, writing, teaching, and international exchange. By partnering with institutions around the world, we have created a new kind of network that embeds global history in global conversations.
WIGH was founded in 2012 by Professors Sven Beckert and Charles S. Maier, through a grant from the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. The Initiative was envisioned as a program to strengthen programmatic cohesion for the strength and diversity that the Harvard history and social science departments already bring to global history approaches. Since its inception, WIGH has hosted visiting scholars and postdoctoral fellows from all over the world, including Brazil, India, Senegal, China, Colombia, Italy, and Germany. We have organized international conferences on soccer as a global phenomenon, agricultural labor, global history of prisons, and global responses E.P. Thompson’s legacy. WIGH also hosts a biweekly “Approaches to Global History” seminar, bringing together interested faculty, students, and WIGH fellows on a continuing basis.
WIGH Postdoctoral Fellowship 2022-2023:
WIGH Fellows are appointed for the academic year 2022-2023 (approximately August 2022-May 2023) and are provided time, guidance, office space, and access to Harvard University facilities. They should be prepared to devote their entire time to productive scholarship and may undertake sustained projects of research or other original work. They will join a vibrant community of global history scholars at Harvard.
Terms:
The competition for these awards is open only to scholars with a PhD (or comparable professional school degree). If still pursuing the PhD, applicants must receive their degree no later than June 2022. There is no limit on time since submission of the candidate’s degree; we are open to candidates at various stages of their careers. We expect that candidates will be able to submit samples of independent work (articles, papers, dissertation chapters) in support of their candidacies on request. The WIGH Fellowship is residential and Fellows are expected to live in the Cambridge/Boston area for the duration of their appointments unless traveling for pre-approved research purposes or unless Harvard University’s coronavirus pandemic response necessitates a switch to a virtual campus. They are expected to participate in WIGH activities, including a bi-weekly seminar.
Fellows will receive an annual stipend of up to $60,000, according to fellows’ needs. Because we cannot always offer the amount requested, we urge applicants to apply for funding from other sources as well. Applications are welcome from qualified persons without regard to nationality, gender, or race.
