PLANET Europe - Joint Masters Programme on European Spatial Planning, Environmental Policies and Regional Development

The “Joint Masters Programme on European Spatial Planning, Environmental Policies and Regional Development” (PLANET Europe) provides an integrated and innovative education programme with a strong connection to international professional practice. The programme is offered by three leading European planning schools: Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands), Cardiff University (UK) and
Blekinge Institute of Technology (Sweden).

PLANET Europe was set up in recognition of the ever increasing influence of European Union (EU) policies and actions on spatial and environmental planning in the EU member states. A great many EU policies for the environment, transport, agriculture or regional development have spatial impacts. Spatial planners today need to understand what these influences are, how they can best respond to them and how they can engage in policy-making at EU level. European regions are more and more interlinked, and cooperation across national borders is now a routine aspect of the work of spatial and environmental planners. Yet considerable differences in how planning is conducted remain across Europe, and planners therefore need to be able to communicate across cultural and institutional boundaries when cooperating with spatial planners in other European countries.

PLANET Europe is a Masters programme taught over 2 years (4 Semesters) to a value of 120 European Credits (ECs). Following a comprehensive introduction on the European dimension of spatial planning and the spatial impacts of EU policies in semester 1 in Nijmegen, in semester 2 students can choose to follow one of two tracks: either ‘European spatial planning and sustainable development’ (Nijmegen-Cardiff track); or ‘European spatial planning and regional economic development’ (Nijmegen-Karlskrona track). In semester 3, students apply their knowledge to planning practice and receive further training on cross-national communication and presentation skills. Students complete their studies with an individual Master thesis on a topic of their choice under joint supervision from experts from two of the universities. Graduates are awarded a double degree.

The programme provides students with a thorough education comprising both theoretical and practical knowledge that will enable them to tackle international and interdisciplinary challenges in their careers in spatial planning, environmental policy-making and regional development. Studying at different universities in Europe (with English as the language of instruction) and in multi-national groups will contribute to the student's preparation for the increasing internationalisation of spatial planning, and for their careers in practice and academia.
