IMETE - International Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Engineering

The International Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Engineering (IMETE) programme trains people to apply and develop environmental technologies, with a strong focus on multidisciplinary and problem-based technology development. It offers a wide range of optional study fields in an international environment. The IMETE graduates will be qualified for a professional career in the private sector (environmental technological applications in different domains), research sector (applied research at universities or research institutions, or in-company research) and the public sector (consulting in local, regional and (inter)national administrations, defining and implementing environmental policy for sustainable development). The IMETE programme intensively promotes networking and exchange of knowledge and experience between different nationalities, in particular with scholars and students from developing countries and countries in transition, which are rapidly growing markets for the application of environmental technologies.

IMETE is offered by a consortium consisting of 3 leading Higher Education Institutes: Ghent University (UGent, Gent, Belgium), UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE, Delft, The Netherlands), and Institute of Chemical Technology Prague (ICTP, Prague, Czech Republic). Student mobility within Europe is an integral part of  the programme, which contains 120 ECTS (2 years). The first semester, organised at UNESCO-IHE, mainly focuses on acquiring general background knowledge as introduction to the domain of environmental technology. It also aims at bringing students from different cultural and educational backgrounds to the same general competence level. In the second semester at ICTP, advanced and specialised environmental technology courses are taught, complemented by an elective project.

Between the first and the second year, a summer school will be held. In the third semester, more specialised environmental technology courses are taught at Ghent University. Students can choose their own specialisation by selecting elective courses. Thesis research can be conducted at one of the previously visited institutes in the fourth semester, in cooperation with associated consortium members from all over the world.. Strong interaction with the professional sector is targeted. Transferable skills courses, including statistics, methodology, and elective language courses (basic introduction to the Dutch and Czech language) are also part of the programme.

The language of instruction is English, although students can also select courses at Ghent University taught in Dutch. Graduates obtain the joint degree "International Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Engineering" from ICTP and UGent, and the double degree "Master of Science in Environmental Science - specialisation Environmental Technology and Engineering" from UNESCO-IHE. As soon as legally allowed, UNESCO-IHE will also deliver the joint degree "International Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Engineering".
