The FAME Master is an international Master degree associating seven European partner universities: Aveiro in Portugal, Bordeaux 1 and Grenoble Institute of Technology in France, Augsburg and Darmstadt in Germany, Liège and Louvain in Belgium. Since 2007, these HEIs offer a training programme for international specialists in the functionalized advanced materials domain, a strategic scientific and technologic field recognized as a key driver for European research and industry. The FAME Master addresses students owning a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Electrochemistry…).
Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their academic records and motivation and are selected by the board of examiners from each of the 7 FAME Consortium universities.Fully taught in English, this Master is unusual for its international aspect and its unique training of excellence as it attracts and selects the best students from all over the world. The first year takes place at Grenoble INP or Augsburg University.
Students are required to spend their 2 years in at least two institutions from different countries, based on the specialization they choose:
- Materials Interfaces: surfaces, composites and coatings (Augsburg)
- Materials for Micro- and Nanotechnologies (Grenoble)
- Nanomaterials and Hybrids (Aveiro)
- Advanced Hybrid Materials and Ceramics by Design (Bordeaux 1)
- Functional Ceramics: processing, characterisation and properties (Darmstadt)
- Nanomaterials and Modelling (Liège)
- Engineering of Materials and Nanostructures (Louvain)
The fourth semester is dedicated to a research thesis carried out either within one of the research laboratories of the European Multifunctional Materials Institute (EMMI, www.emmimaterials. eu) or within an industry partner. After achievement of the curriculum, students will be graduated with a double Master degree in Materials Science. They are also awarded the « Erasmus Mundus » label of excellence of the European Commission.
The FAME Master highly encourages to carry on with Doctorate studies: - with IDS FunMat EMJD programme offering Erasmus Mundus grants (www.ids-funmat.org)- among Ph.D. programs in Europe - and/or scientific or Research & Development functions within industries or innovating start-ups in the technological domain of functionalized advanced materials (Microelectronics, Telecommunication, Optics, Bio-technologies, Energy, Environment, Technologies for health…).
